General Tips
- Qualitative Waste Prevention means reducing or eliminating the use of hazardous and toxic substances, such as: mercury, lead, cadmium, asbestos, various heavy metals, chlorofluorocarbons and other hazardous substances used in batteries, brakes, packaging, appliances, building materials, refrigerators, plastic foams, air conditioning systems, sprays, etc. It also means banning certain environmentally unfriendly packaging materials (e.g., PVC plastics, chlorinated materials).
- Qualitative Waste Prevention Prevention means measures for the production of smaller quantities of waste. To a large extent, this means taking measures with regard to packaging. For example, reducing the volume or weight of packaging, avoiding ‘over packaging’, changing the packaging materials for many products. Qualitative waste prevention also means producing products with a longer life and more uses. Finally, it should be highlighted that qualitative waste prevention depends on the active participation of citizens, through their adoption of environmental criteria in the purchasing of various products and their actions in work and home life.
The implementation and success of waste prevention requires that the state take legislative and economic measures that enable local authorities to carry out the relevant interventions in their region and provide the right incentives and disincentives in the private sector for reducing the volume and weight of packaging materials and determining the substances used in them.
